The Former President's Ambition for a Predominantly White Nation That Never Was
As the political power of Donald Trump diminishes and his behavior grows increasingly volatile, he has intensified hostile rhetoric aimed at women in media and racial minorities, including Somali immigrants as a recent focal point. The impact of these insults stems from the animosity behind them and his position, not any basis in truth. Similarly, the government's actions against immigrants are poorly executed and driven by misinformation. It is abundantly clear that the objective is not targeting those who have committed crimes. The assault is directed at people of color.
This includes Indigenous peoples carrying tribal IDs to naturalized US citizens, individuals performing critical jobs in construction and healthcare to military veterans, college students, people in their own homes, and very young children: a wide array of the country's population is under siege.
"ICE operations are cruel, unjust and achieve nothing for community security," asserts a prominent New York City official. Scenes featuring masked agents breaking car glass and dragging parents away from infants, terrorizing entire communities and disrupting schools and businesses, undermines safety entirely.
The cycles of calculated hatred—focusing on Haitians during the election, Venezuelan migrants this spring, and most recently Somali Americans—lean heavily on libelous lies and slurs. This is because: the actual facts about these communities cannot support such hostility.
The Imaginary Nation of White People Versus Actual History
The strategy of frightening and vilifying claims to seek at rebuilding a homogeneously white America that is a fantasy. While the US was demographically whiter in the mid-20th century, it was never exclusively a "white country". In 1776, the original thirteen colonies contained a substantial percentage of African and Native American individuals—some southern states were over one-third Black.
Following American expansion, taking Texas in the 1840s and acquiring northern Mexico in 1848, it incorporated a large Spanish-speaking population long established in the modern Southwest and California. Historical records show the initial Muslim of African descent in territory that became the U.S. arrived with a Spanish expedition nearly a century before the Mayflower English Puritans landed in Massachusetts in 1620.
Population Truths Versus Coercive Fantasies
The systematic targeting of huge populations of people of color and even mass deportations cannot fabricate the all-white nation of extremist imagination. A city like Los Angeles, for instance, is close to 50% Hispanic, and despite enforcement outrages, detentions and removals, it remains so. The city's very name is Spanish, an ongoing testament of its original inhabitants.
All this hatred and oppression looks like the fear of racists who pretend they can halt the demographic future of a country that is ceasing to be predominantly white by using pure cruelty.
It is coupled with an attack on abortion access that is, sometimes, openly intended to encourage white women to have more children. The argument points to a below-replacement birthrate in the US, a trend less severe than in other countries due to a young, industrious immigrant workforce which keeps the economy functioning. However, rather than providing the societal assistance that might make raising children easier, the approach is punitive and coercive.
An noted writer notes that the reproductive politics of certain political figures—along with insults toward childless women—constitute a form of pronatalism. This ideology "usually combines concerns over falling fertility with opposition to immigration and anti-feminist ideas."
In a similar vein, reporting indicates that "efforts to bolster the fertility rate do not compensate for wider administrative priorities designed to cut government assistance initiatives like Medicaid and children's health insurance. This focus on families is not just for encouraging procreation. Rather, it is utilized as a tool to advance a conservative agenda that endangers the health of women, bodily autonomy, and economic participation."
Contradictory Strategies and Widespread Resistance
Together, the anti-immigrant and pronatalist policies constitute an effort to forcibly alter the nation's demographic trajectory. Ultimately, both amount to senseless intimidation by proponents of hate who inadvertently reveal that their claims to superiority must be based on skin color and sex; absent these categories, their positions devolve into incoherent nonsense.
A lot of the reasoning put forward by the administration fails to align with tangible facts and actual outcomes. As an instance, naval operations in the southern Caribbean often target small vessels which are not proven to be carrying narcotics and not able of reaching US shores. Likewise, Venezuela's involvement in fentanyl trafficking is minimal, and its involvement with cocaine is much smaller than that of other South American nations.
The government's position extends to climate issues, with a dismissal of "climate change ideology" and "Net Zero goals." An emotional attachment to fossil fuels, especially coal mining, resulting in measures that compel localities to invest in obsolete and toxic energy sources while undermining cheaper, cleaner renewables. Concurrently, health officials have advanced anti-scientific dietary schemes while eroding general public health safeguards.
The core premise of the attacks on immigrants is that non-white individuals born abroad are threatening outsiders. However, across the nation—in cities like L.A. and Charlotte, from Chicago to Portland—the government's own forces, the ICE and Border Patrol officers, whom local communities perceive as the unwelcome, violent invaders.
No symbol is more powerful of the broad repudiation of this approach than the countless individuals mobilizing, demonstrating, risking safety and arrest to protect their communities. Municipality after municipality has risen up in defense of its residents. All the insults and threats can change that reality.
