2026 is Poised to Be Declared the Era of the Amphibian Adventure.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my biggest takeaway was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these hoppy characters. Considering a collection of frogs is known as an army, it feels they are staking their claim.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Amphibians have been far from new to the interactive entertainment. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. Yet, their visibility has seemingly exploded in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. Although, some of these are novelty titles, a sizable number are serious titles centered on frogs.

A Data-Driven Dive

To quantify this phenomenon, I performed a thorough analysis into the past five years of frog-related gaming on Steam. My methodology was based on clear indicators, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The data paint a clear picture: a consistent rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The creature's growing prominence in the public consciousness is somewhat visible elsewhere, for example the revival of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. Yet, the wave in gaming appears uniquely powerful.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

In my opinion, this is a trend I can get behind. Frogs offer inherent appealing traits for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are perfectly suited to be designed as quirky characters that tend to be a highlight in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their long tongues and grappling abilities facilitate a wide array of creative gameplay ideas.

Many of the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. For instance the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the chance for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the largest year yet.

When these games are received positively—and based on past trends, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we may indeed be on the verge of a true frog gaming renaissance.
